Never had gel polish before? Read on…

The advantage of a gel polish over a traditional polish is it dries instantly and can last for 3 weeks without smudging or chipping.

So if you have the choice of painting your nails with a polish that chips and one that doesn’t, it seems to be a no brainer to go for the one that doesn’t.

We use gel polish but you may also of heard of shellac. Both dry instantly and are long lasting but there are some differences. So which one do you go for? Shellac or gel nail polish?

WHAT’S SHELLAC?

Some people reference it as shellac gel nails. This is because the product is half regular polish, half gel. You cure the colour and set the polish by putting your nails under a special UV light.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SHELLAC AND GEL?

The difference between gel and shellac isn’t going to blow your mind, but none the less, there is one. Put simply, a shellac mani is a semi-permanent polish, while gel is a semi-permanent gel.

DOES GEL LAST LONGER THAN SHELLAC?

Yes. Shellac is thinner than gelish, so it generally starts to ‘break down’ around 2 weeks, whereas gelish lasts up to three.

WHICH ONE IS HARDER TO TAKE OFF?

Because shellac is a polish, it’s easier to remove than gel and kinder to your nails as you don’t have to buff your nail plate to ‘break’ the bond.

When you remove gel nail varnish, you file the top layer off and then soak your nails in acetone, but when you remove shellac nails, you simply soak in acetone.

SO I SHOULD CHOOSE SHELLAC OVER GEL?

Well, there’s also the colour selection to take into consideration. While gel has hundreds of shades to choose from, Shellac only has 116 shades in the range.

It all depends on what you’re looking for. If you plan on taking your semi-permanent polish off at home, go for shellac so you have less chance of ruining your natural nail. But if you’re after a particular shade and want your polish to last a bit longer go for gel, just get a professional to remove it later.
